Disney Cruise Line: Is It Worth It For 2 Adults?

Port Canaveral, Florida

Typically, we spend the majority of our vacations at Walt Disney World, but in 2019 we decided to try someplace new. We wanted to try a cruise to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. Of course, the cruise line that stood out the MOST was Disney Cruise Line. We looked into our options and decided to book our first cruise together.

Why did we choose DCL?

  • The service (We chose to cruise with Disney based on the quality of service we receive at the theme parks. Disney goes above and beyond with everything they do so we expected that the cruise line would be just as pristine)

  • The adult only areas (Even though it’s a family cruise line, the adult only areas are practically empty)

  • Castaway Cay (Disney’s Private Island)

  • Disney Magic

  • AquaDuck (Water coaster found on the Dream and the Fantasy)

  • Fireworks at sea

Which cruise ship did we decide to sail on?

Disney Dream

Disney Dream

We set sail on the Disney Dream for our very first cruise. The Dream is one of the four ships owned by the DCL. The Dream began operating in 2011 and is the sister ship of the Fantasy. We chose the Dream for three main reasons the AquaDuck, the layout of the Rainforest room, and the port it was sailing from when booking our trip. At this point in time we have only sailed on the Dream, but we do plan on experiencing all of the ships when cruising begins operating again.

Where did we go?

Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay

We decided on a 4 night cruise from Port Canaveral in April. We chose to depart from Port Canaveral because it’s only an hour away from Orlando. This allows us to sneak in a quick Disney trip before and after we cruise.

This trip consisted of 4 nights, 5 days.

  • Embarkation Day

  • Nassau, Bahamas

  • Sea Day

  • Castaway Cay

  • Disembarkation Day

Disney offers a wide variety of cruise destinations, we wanted to start small to test the waters to see if we liked cruising.

Is it fun even without having kids?

IMG_3615.jpeg

Absolutely!!! We are huge Disney fans so we might be a little bias, but I can assure you that there is something for everyone! You can have as little or as much Disney as you’d like. There are shows and restaurants tailored to Disney fanatics, but there are many activities and bars that aren’t Disney centered.

Adult only areas on board the Dream

  • The Quiet Cove (pool and whirlpools)

  • The fitness center

  • The Senses Spa and Salon

  • Fine dining at Palo and Remy

  • Satellite Falls (sun deck and wading pool)

  • Night Clubs and Lounges: Cove Café (coffee and adult beverages), Skyline, Currents, District Lounge, Pink: Wine and Champagne Bar, D Lounge, Evolution, Pub 687, Meridian, and Bon Voyage

(There’s even an adult only area off the cruise on Disney’s Private Island)

**Even though these areas are adult-only, don’t be surprised if families walk by briefly making their way around the ship.

Cost?

Prices vary dependent on the type of room you’d like, destination, time of year, and the length of the trip. Disney Cruise Line may be a pricier option when deciding which cruise line you want to book, but in my opinion it’s worth the extra cost. For example, our first cruise we stayed in a Verandah (balcony room) and did a 4 night cruise stopping in Nassau and Castaway Cay in April. We did that same exact cruise in February of 2020 for a lot less.

What’s included on the Disney Dream?

There are many things that are included on the Dream, but there are also some things that are an up charge or an add on. Let’s talk about what’s included:

  • Food at Cabanas, Animators Palate, Enchanted Garden, Royal Palace, Flo’s Cafe

(Remy and Palo are an additional charge)

  • Soft Drinks

(on Deck 11 you will find a beverage station to grab a drink whenever you’d like)

  • Soft Serve Ice Cream at Eye Scream Treats

  • AquaDuck

  • Pools

  • Castaway Cay

    (if on itinerary)

  • Entertainment

  • Many of the room service items are free, but don’t forget to leave a nice tip for the service team

***there are specialty beverages and snacks that may be an additional up charge (treats at the theater, specialty ice cream at Vanelopes, alcohol, etc.)

Castaway Cay

IMG_3858.jpeg

Castaway Cay is Disney’s Private Island located in the Bahamas. This island is perfect for families, couples, or anyone who enjoys the beach. This island has so much to do. There are excursions you can pay to do, but you can enjoy the island without spending a penny.

My favorite things that are included on the island:

  • Lunch (Buffet Style Barbecue)

  • Coffee, tea, and soda

  • Beaches (family and adult-only beaches)

  • Island tram transportation

  • Soft serve ice cream

  • Hammocks

Why do we keep going back?

As you can see, the Disney Cruise Line has a lot to offer. We plan on going on many more trips in the future once sailing begins again. Why do we continue to cruise with Disney?

  • The EXCEPTIONAL service

  • The food

  • Castaway Cay

  • Pirate night

  • The lifelong memories

So to answer the imposing question, Is a Disney Cruise worth the price for two adults? Although I have only sailed with one other cruise line besides Disney, my opinion is yes, 100%. That answer may vary depending on your vacation needs. If you are wanting to give it one shot to see if you like it, I would suggest booking a four night cruise and making sure it stops at Castaway Cay.

Have you ever been on a Disney Cruise? If not, what’s holding you back!
